It's the middle of July. A thick layer of frost lies over the Arb. It will melt by midday, as the sun weakly peeks through the thick cloud and dust cover, warm the broken pavement of State Street to a balmy 50 degrees. The Great Lakes have begun to freeze over. Its only getting colder every day because of the perma haze that has settled over the Midwest since the Republic of St. Francis and the Breaking of the Mothership.
Most of Ann Arbor is abandoned. I-94 West is an immovable mass of broken and bombed out vehicles, silent testaments to a different age. Boarded houses and still smoldering, burned out shells line the winding abandoned roads of Barton Hills. At night, strange terrifying noises are heard from the water treatment plant near Washtenaw Community College. Alien lights appear in the sky and then dash quickly towards the diminishing pockets of resistance, based in Detroit and Windsor.
You have gathered a small rag tag group around you. Some have joined out of fear, some out of the need for each other, all of you driven, at least outwardly, by the basic need to survive and tell your story and the stories of those you have lost. The Republic of St Francis beckons you. Nightly, you gather and listen to pirate broadcasts talk about the shining city on a hill, beamed in on a wing and listless prayer. The next evening these stations are only static deserts, crackling their oblivion.
